Work as Yet Exceptionally Executed!
2017 has been a busy year within the office and we commend the entire Harris Black team for their commitment and drive, forever ensuring our clients receive the highest level of service for which HB is well known. We have continued to work passionately with a huge number of long standing and valued clients, helping them to both achieve their goals and develop exciting new business strategies. Additionally, we welcomed an influx of new clients, many of whom 'migrated' from the traditional 'Big Four' firms in search of a more personal tax and advisory experience with direct access to HB partners, Brendan, Paul, Renee and Nathan.
Ours is a field where a commitment to continuing education is a must. Study is often commenced and completed whilst working full-time and accordingly congratulations are well deserved. Hats off to the following staff for their achievements in 2017:
- Keziah Sedgwick – completed CA qualifications;
Lauren McKenzie – graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Business Majoring in Accounting; and
HB Directors – Brendan, Paul, Renee and Nathan… each of whom completed the necessary Superannuation and SMSF qualifications in order for Harris Black to obtain a limited Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL). (An AFSL must be held by accountants if they are to provide advice to their clients relating to superannuation and SMSF's.)
It's indeed been a great year for milestones and achievements… Harris Black as a firm celebrated our 23rd anniversary since commencement in 1994. Additionally, as a founding partner of the Brentnalls Accounting Affiliation, Harris Black proudly ranked 25th in the Australian Financial Review's 2017 'Top 100 Accounting Firms'.
Director Renee Bettenay, had cake and champagne in July with the entire team to celebrate her 20 year commitment to HB, whilst Director Paul Whimp clocked up 15 years also. The 2017 year also saw Rob Williams, Kim Schluter and Gerald Simeon celebrate 5 years with Harris Black.
Happily, personal celebrations for a number of the HB family weren't in short supply either…
Practice Accountant, Vanessa Cook and her husband Simon welcomed baby Seth Henry Cook early in the year;
Bjorn Kirberg, one of the firm's Senior Managers, married his fiancé Michelle in February;
In May, after a 9 year process, valued Admin Team Member, Gerald Simeon proudly became an Australian Citizen; and
Each of our Office Manager, Kim Schluter, Manager Tomoka Takami and Executive Assistant to Directors, Cassie Wall were engaged this year also!
March and October saw Directors and Managers alike attending Brentnalls conferences in Torquay, Victoria and Queenstown NZ respectively. Proudly, our own Director, Paul Whimp was appointed Chairperson of the group this year and will lead the affiliate through to March 2019. The conferences are a valuable opportunity to share information and ideas with our affiliate firms. The core focus being on how best to improve our services and ultimately provide positive outcomes for our clients.
Additionally, in August a small contingency of staff from Harris Black manned an 'expo style' booth at QUT's Careers Event for small to medium sized accountancy practices. Harris Black is an avid supporter of the QUT Realise Program and recognised this as a great opportunity to connect with some very impressive upcoming graduates.
This year also Harris Black has proudly held a number of fund raising events both internally and externally in support of Camp Quality. Chocolate sales, a staff tennis competition and involvement in the Touch Rugby League Charity Cup (we placed 2nd!) raised over $2,000 for this most deserved of charities supporting children diagnosed with cancer.
Finally, as we now head off to celebrate Christmas together, it's worth noting that in true Harris Black style, 2017 has seen us share some very special and fun firm events. HB Staff Day introduced the concept of a "Growth Mindset" (our new team catch phrase), EOFY dinner as always followed the Staff Day teamwork and these events, along with Melbourne Cup celebrated at the Doomben Racecourse under a beautiful marquee in November were all memorable and team building get-togethers.
We certainly look forward to further great achievements, more special events and reasons for celebration, not to mention the continued provision of great service and the ongoing development of positive relationships with our valued clients in 2018.
Christmas wishes to all!
Stay safe and enjoy your time with family and friends!
