Harris Black Business Leaders Forum – November 2026

We’re excited to invite you to our next HB Business Leaders Forum on Thursday, 12 November 2026 focusing on “Growth & Profit Acceleration 2027”.

Event Details:

  • Date: 12 November 2026
  • Time: 7:45am to 11:00am
  • Location: Business Hub Level 1 100 Creek Street Brisbane Qld 4000
  • Suggested Parking – Secure Parking Adelaide Street
  • Light breakfast and morning tea will be provided

2027 will reward the leaders who stay adaptable. Markets are shifting and AI is changing how customers buy — the leaders who re-test their strategy now, rather than defaulting to what worked in 2026, are the ones who’ll pull ahead.

This session cuts through the noise and works through what’s actually driving growth and profit right now, backed by real experience from peers steering businesses through the same conditions. You’ll work through:

  • What actually drove growth and profit in 2026, and what to carry into 2027
  • Best practice on sales, referrals and marketing that keeps the human edge when everyone’s using the same AI tools
  • Where your competitive advantage is hiding and the gaps costing you growth and profit
  • The mindset shifts separating high performers from everyone else in 2027
  • A 2027 performance plan, stress-tested by the room around your top 3 priorities

You’ll leave with a practical plan, challenged by peers, and sharper thinking on where your growth and profit will come from in 2027.

Book your ticket now.

Recent Updates From The ATO

Some news from the ATO from the last quarter:

ATO to continue accepting credit card payments until 30 June 2027

The Australian Taxation Office had previously announced that it would stop accepting direct credit card payments from 30 November 2026.

Following concerns raised by small businesses and other taxpayers, the Australian Government has announced transitional funding that will allow the ATO to continue accepting direct credit card payments until 30 June 2027. This will provide additional time for the ATO to consult with affected taxpayers and consider targeted support and alternative payment arrangements.

After 30 June 2027, taxpayers will still be able to make credit card payments through third-party providers. Other payment methods, including debit card and bank transfer, will also remain available.

Dynamic PAYG Instalments Coming from 1 July 2027

Expecting to commence from 1 July 2027, businesses will be able to use an ATO-approved calculation incorporated into participating accounting software to align their PAYG instalments more closely with current business performance. This is intended to make instalment payments more responsive to changing trading conditions, rather than relying primarily on historical income.

The Australian Taxation Office is currently conducting pilot programs and working with software providers and stakeholders ahead of the proposed commencement date. Further details about the operation of the method are expected as implementation progresses.

Changes to SMSF Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangements from 10 August 2026

The law governing limited recourse borrowing arrangements, or LRBAs, for regulated superannuation funds has changed.

For arrangements entered into on or after 10 August 2026, real property that does not satisfy the definition of “business real property” is excluded from the assets that may be acquired under an LRBA. As a result, an SMSF generally cannot enter into a new LRBA to purchase residential investment property.

The changes do not affect arrangements entered into before 10 August 2026 or the refinancing of those existing arrangements.

$20,000 Instant Asset Write-Off Made Permanent

From 1 July 2026, the $20,000 instant asset write-off is permanent for eligible small businesses with aggregated turnover of less than $10 million that use the simplified depreciation rules.

Eligible businesses can immediately deduct the business-use portion of qualifying assets costing less than $20,000. The threshold applies per asset, and small business pool balances below $20,000 may also be immediately deducted.

Contact your Harris Black team member to discuss how these changes affect your business!

Brentnalls Conference – Brisbane | October 2026

Harris Black had the pleasure of hosting the 59th Brentnalls Affiliation Conference in Brisbane, welcoming Directors, Principals and Practice Managers from affiliated firms across Australia and New Zealand. Held at the W Brisbane, the conference brought together some of the profession’s most experienced leaders to share ideas, discuss emerging challenges, and explore opportunities shaping the future of accounting and advisory firms.

Future Ready, Together

The conference theme, “Future Ready, Together: Leading Through Change. Building For Tomorrow,” reflected many of the conversations held throughout the two-day program. As firms navigate increasing regulatory requirements, rapid technological change and ongoing succession challenges, the value of collaboration and shared learning across the Brentnalls Affiliation has never been greater.

A particular highlight of the conference was the opportunity for each firm to present practice updates, sharing successes, challenges and lessons learned in areas including advisory services, governance, leadership development, succession planning, AI implementation and operational efficiency. These sessions continue to be one of the most valuable aspects of the affiliation, providing practical insights that firms can adapt and apply within their own practices.

Industry Insights and Looking Ahead

The conference featured a range of presenters who challenged attendees to think differently about the future of professional services.

Sessions explored economic and business trends, developments within the accounting profession, benchmarking and practice performance, mergers and acquisitions advice, and the opportunities and risks presented by emerging technologies. A standout presentation from futurist Dr Camila Mozzini-Alister encouraged delegates to focus not only on predicting the future but actively shaping it.

Artificial intelligence remained a key discussion topic throughout the conference, with firms openly sharing their experiences, successes and challenges in adopting AI tools to improve efficiency, enhance client service and support team development. Benchmarking sessions also generated significant discussion as firms compared performance metrics, processes and technology strategies.

Learning from the Past

Another memorable session was the Brentnalls Alumni Panel, which brought together former leaders from across the affiliation to reflect on the history of Brentnalls, lessons learned throughout their careers, and insights for the next generation of leaders. Their experiences provided valuable perspective on the importance of relationships, adaptability, and long-term thinking in an ever-changing profession.

We were grateful to Brendan Power, Craig Farrow, James Black, and John Crouch for taking the time to share their experiences, reflections, and wisdom accumulated over many years in practice.

The conference also provided an opportunity to reflect on the Brentnalls journey, with delegates recognising almost three decades of collaboration since the affiliation was established in 1997. The session served as a reminder that while our profession continues to evolve, the strength of the Brentnalls network has always been built on a willingness to share knowledge, support one another, and collaborate for the benefit of our firms and clients.

Brisbane Hospitality

As hosts, Harris Black was proud to showcase Brisbane and provide opportunities for delegates to connect outside the conference room. From welcome drinks overlooking the city skyline at The Lex, to dinner at Persone and a closing celebration at Cicada Blu on Brisbane’s Sky Deck, the social program offered plenty of opportunities to strengthen relationships and continue conversations in a relaxed setting. Optional morning walks along the Brisbane River also proved to be a great way to start the day.

Stronger Together

The 2026 conference reinforced the strength of the Brentnalls Affiliation and the benefits of working together while remaining independently owned firms. By openly sharing ideas, experiences and practical solutions, members continue to help one another navigate change and improve outcomes for clients, teams and communities.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to another successful conference and look forward to continuing the conversations and initiatives that emerged from our time together in Brisbane.

Celebrating One Year At Level 9, 100 Creek Street

It’s hard to believe that it has already been one year since Harris Black opened the doors to our new office address at Level 9, 100 Creek Street Brisbane City (We’re Moving – Harris Black).

Over the past 12 months, our new workspace has become much more than just an office. It has provided a modern, collaborative environment where our team can connect, innovate, and continue delivering exceptional client experience.

The move marked an exciting new chapter for Harris Black, creating a space that reflects who we are today while supporting our continued growth into the future. From client meetings and team workshops to celebrations and everyday collaboration, Level 9 has quickly become the home of many great moments and achievements.

As we celebrate this milestone, we would like to thank our clients, colleagues, and business partners for being part of the journey. Your ongoing support has helped make the past year a successful and memorable one.

Here’s to our first year at 100 Creek Street and to many more years of growth, collaboration, and success ahead.

Meet The Staff – Patrick Humphrey

It’s time to re-meet Pat and learn a little more about what he gets up to outside of Harris Black.

He enjoys gardening, mountain biking, walking his dog Colby and watching YouTube. Pat is looking forward to a well-deserved Christmas break and the upcoming Brentnalls conference in New Zealand in February. If he could live anywhere, it would be a cozy log cabin in Whistler, Vancouver.

If Pat could only eat one meal for the rest of his life, it would be pizza. His dream dinner party would bring together an interesting and entertaining mix of his partner Jas, his grandma, Hamish Blake and Andy Lee. When it comes to cooking, Pat enjoys putting together everything from arancini balls and cottage pie to garlic bread and his famous cookies with Nutella and caramel.

Pat’s first job was as a cook at KFC, where he spent four years, and he could happily give a 40-minute presentation on all thing’s coffee. One of his favourite Harris Black memories is his first Staff Day, which featured an Amazing Race style game through the Botanic gardens and a teppanyaki dinner.

With plenty of interests outside the office, it’s great to re-meet Pat and learn a little more about what makes him tick.
